Family Name: The character 牟 originally refers to the sound of a cow's moo or a mountain name. The Mou clan traces back to the ancient state of Mou, one of the vassal states during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046–771 BCE). The rulers and their descendants of the state of Mou adopted the state name as their surname. Additionally, some Mou surnames originate from the Jiang clan, descendants of the royal family of the State of Qi.
